¿Qué es Give Big Kern?

Give Big Kern is set aside as “One day to celebrate the giving spirit of Kern County.” Kern’s generous community comes together to raise dollars and volunteer hours for local nonprofits through online crowdfunding and pledges over a 24-hour period. In the months leading up to Give Big Kern, trainings and highly publicized events help strengthen nonprofits individually and make their presence more visible in the community. Participants learn marketing, social media, and board engagement and donor cultivation skills. They also connect with one another through strategic networking, thus making the entire local nonprofit sector stronger.
In 2019, Give Big Kern received our community’s distinguished Beautiful Bakersfield Award for helping to create “A Better Bakersfield”!

¿Qué es Big Kern? 
Give Big Kern se reserva como "Un día para celebrar el espíritu generoso del Condado de Kern". La generosa comunidad de Kern se une para recaudar fondos monetarios y horas de voluntariado para organizaciones sin fines de lucro locales a través de colectas durante un período de 24 horas. En los meses previos a Give Big Kern, las capacitaciones y los eventos altamente publicitados ayudan a fortalecer a las organizaciones sin fines de lucro de forma individual y a hacer que su presencia sea más visible en la comunidad. Los participantes aprenden habilidades de marketing, redes sociales, participación en juntas y de cultivo de donantes. También se conectan entre sí a través de redes estratégicas, lo que fortalece a todo el sector local sin fines de lucro.
¡En el 2019, Give Big Kern recibió el distinguido Premio “Beautiful Bakersfield” de nuestra comunidad por ayudar a crear "Un Mejor Bakersfield "!

“Once you open the door, we can keep coming through.” - Jennifer Huerta, College Dream Fund Scholarship Recipient 
Jennifer Huerta is the first in her family to pursue a college education. She has faced the adversity that comes with being the first. The “door” Huerta refers to is the access of financial and educational support that she received from Youth 2 Leaders Education Foundation (Y2LEF) in her journey to higher education. 

Youth 2 Leaders Education Foundation is a nonprofit organization working to help low-income and underrepresented students plan and pay for higher education. Y2LEF has worked to increase college access and entry for students across the Southern Central Valley through pre-college programs, Cash for College workshops, in-house immigration services, AmeriCorps initiatives, and scholarships. 
Y2LEF developed three scholarship opportunities for first-in-family prospective and current undergraduate students: the Future Leaders Scholarship, the College Dream Fund Scholarship, and the Young Mexican Leaders Scholarship. The scholarships alleviate a portion, if not all, of the students’ unmet costs of financial aid. The unmet costs account for tuition, transportation, room and board, and school supplies.
 
“The scholarship helps my family not have a burden,” Huerta says. In her experience, she is able to have additional funds which prevents her family from being impacted financially and Huerta from feeling guilty about pursuing a college education. 
After being awarded, Y2LEF scholarship recipients have paid it forward by assisting Kern County high school students complete financial aid applications and mentoring Migrant Education Program students at pre-college camps as Camp Leaders and panelists. 
Through Give Big Kern, Y2LEF is asking community members to donate to the 2020-21 scholarship fund. Donations will help award and aid more students like Jennifer Huerta. For more information about the organization, please visit www.y2lef.org.

"Una vez que abres la puerta, podemos seguir entrando". - Jennifer Huerta, beneficiaria de la beca College Dream Fund
Jennifer Huerta es la primera en su familia en seguir una educación universitaria. Ella ha enfrentado la adversidad que viene con ser de primera generación. La "puerta" a la que se refiere Huerta es el acceso al apoyo financiero y educativo que recibió de la Fundación Educativa Youth 2 Leaders (Y2LEF) en su viaje hacia la educación superior.
La Fundación Educativa Youth 2 Leaders, es una organización sin fines de lucro que trabaja para ayudar a los estudiantes de bajos ingresos y subrepresentados a planificar y pagar la educación universitaria. Y2LEF ha trabajado para aumentar el acceso a la universidad y la entrada de estudiantes en todo el Valle Central del Sur a través de programas preuniversitarios, talleres de ayuda financiera para el colegio, servicios de inmigración internos, iniciativas de AmeriCorps y becas.
Y2LEF desarrolló tres oportunidades de becas para los primeros estudiantes de pregrado actuales y futuros de la familia: Future Leaders Scholarship, College Dream Fund, y Young Mexican Leaders Scholarship. Las becas absorben los gastos académicos, dejando de lado los gastos de matrícula, transporte, alojamiento, comida, y útiles escolares.
"La beca ayuda a mi familia a no tener una carga", dice Huerta. En su experiencia, ella puede tener fondos adicionales que evitan que su familia se vea afectada financieramente y que Huerta se sienta culpable por seguir su educación universitaria.
Después de recibir la beca, los beneficiarios ayudan a los estudiantes de secundaria del condado de Kern a completar las solicitudes de ayuda financiera y asesorar a los estudiantes del Programa de Educación Migrante en campamentos preuniversitarios como líderes y panelistas del campamento.
